Institute of Brain Science,Fudan University
State Key Laboratory of Brain Function and Disorders
The State Key Laboratory of Medical Neurobiology was established in 1994. After its restructuring in 2023, it was officially renamed State Key Laboratory of Brain Function and Disorders, serving as an important base for high-level neuroscience research and talent cultivation in China. The Institute of Brain Science was founded in 2006 and operates as an integrated entity with State Key Laboratory of Brain Function and Disorders. It is a substantive institution for scientific research and talent cultivation at Fudan University. The positions of Director of State Key Laboratory of Brain Function and Disorders and Dean of the Institute of Brain Science are both held by Academician Ma Lan. Currently, there are 46 research groups, with 38 directly under the institute; there are 69 researchers, including 8 dual-appointed researchers. Among the researchers, there are 3 academicians of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, 8 national-level high-caliber talents, 16 national-level young talents, and 1 innovation team each recognized by the National Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC), the Ministry of Science and Technology, the Ministry of Education, and the Shanghai Municipality. A total of 32 individuals have received support from national and Shanghai-level high-end talent programs. This institution has been selected as a base under the '111 Plan for Discipline Innovation and Talent Introduction in Higher Education Institutions' by the Ministry of Education and the State Administration of Foreign Experts Affairs.
Since its establishment, the institution has undertaken over 100 scientific research projects funded by the Ministry of Science and Technology, the NSFC, and provincial and ministerial-level agencies, with research funding exceeding 950 million yuan. Over 170 original research papers, with researchers from our institute as corresponding authors, have been published in journals such as Science and Nature. The institution's research achievements have been honored with two Second Prizes of the National Natural Science Award, eight Second Prizes of the National Science and Technology Progress Award, one Second Prize of the National Technology Invention Award, two selections as one of the 'Top Ten Scientific Advances in China' (formerly known as the 'Top Ten Science and Technology News in China'), and one selection as a 'Major Advance in Neuroscience in China for 2024.
Ministry of Education Frontier Science Center for Brain Science
In March 2018, the Frontier Science Center for Brain Science at Fudan University received approval from the Ministry of Education to become the first frontier science center under China's national 'Peak Plan.' The 'Peak Plan,' formally known as the 'Peak Plan for Basic Research in Higher Education Institutions,' aims to explore modern university systems, fully leverage their pivotal roles in talent cultivation, scientific research, and discipline development, deepen institutional and systemic reforms, attract top-tier talent from around the world, promote in-depth interdisciplinary integration and the integration of science and education, and establish itself as China's most representative innovation center and cradle of talent in relevant basic and frontier fields, as well as an academic hub with international leadership. The center is a substantive institution established with the support of a university, implementing a new management and operational mechanism. Currently, it is based on and physically supported by State Key Laboratory of Brain Function and Disorders /the Institute of Brain Science, Fudan University. It involves the participation of research institutions such as State Key Laboratory of Brain Function and Disorders/ the Institute of Brain Science, the Institute for Translational Brain Research, the Institute of Brain-inspired Intelligence Science and Technology, and the Institute for Research and Translation of Major Brain Disorders, among others. It also collaborates with multidisciplinary research forces from life sciences, brain medicine, mathematics, information science, materials science, microelectronics, brain-inspired intelligence, and other fields.
